Welcome to Year 2!
Our topics this year are: Investigators, Remember Remember, Happily Ever After, Superheroes, Weird and Wonderful and Explorers and Journeys.
As authors, we will learn how to write a range of sentences accurately (statements, exclamations, questions and commands, using the appropriate punctuation). We will learn how to use conjunctions to write longer sentences (words like and, but and because). Our writing will become more interesting to read as we learn to include exciting, imaginative noun phrases. Throughout the year, we will create stories, reports and poems. We will work as a whole class, in learning partners and independently to improve our writing.
In our reading time, we will develop our skills to read out loud for an audience with fluency and expression. We will help each other learn how to work out new or tricky words and we will talk about what new words mean. We can show off what we have learnt and understood from a story or information book by using the text to answer questions. We also enjoy a class story, read by our teachers – so far these have included The Worst Witch, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The BFG!
As mathematicians in year 2, we become real experts on place value. We become confident at calculations (add, subtract, multiply and divide) and we can use these to solve word problems. We learn about fractions, 2D and 3D shapes, money and time. Can you believe we are only in year 2?!
