At Amesbury CE Primary School, we believe that reading is at the centre of learning. With our text driven English curriculum we strive for children to learn to love books through daily storytelling sessions and exposure to a wide range of genres.
Throughout the school, our English curriculum is driven by books. Each year group has six high quality texts picked out for them, allowing the children to access a variety of genres and themes. Each book will allow the children to gain a greater understanding of the world, as well as developing a love for reading and writing. The children are given opportunities to immerse themselves in the narrative of a story, get to know the characters and to understand the story format. Children are encouraged to read a wide variety of genres through our well resourced and modern reading scheme which they read at home with parents and also in school with staff and trained reading volunteers.
We structure our reading lessons through ‘whole class reading’ using VIPERS to ensure all children are accessing rich texts and learning how to use and apply the skills of understanding new and unfamiliar vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and summarising (sequencing KS1).
Children’s reading develops at different rates and to support this, teaching of reading is tailored to each child and their ability. Each child will be challenged during whole class reading sessions, supported and be heard to read one to one at least once a week and also be regularly assessed to ensure they are progressing at a steady rate. Children are encouraged to read a range of books in school and at home. Children’s reading at home is checked weekly with regular communication between home and school to ensure this is happening.
