At Amesbury CE Primary, our ACE values of Ambition, Courage and Empathy are at the heart of our school. Staff challenge and support children to be ambitious in their learning by breaking down barriers and widening horizons; to have courage to try new things and show empathy towards others. This is supported by our Christian underpinning, ‘Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart’ which means that staff at all levels have a moral prerogative to ensure that children make the best possible progress from their starting points, irrespective of their background or challenges they may face.

Our Raising Attaining Plan (RAP) emphasises the importance of high quality teaching and learning and improving this is a significant priority for our school. The findings from the Education Endowment Fund (EEF) state that effective teaching, has the greatest impact on ‘closing the gap’ by benefiting all pupils but particularly those who are disadvantaged or vulnerable. Therefore, we invest in high-quality CPD for all our staff that is research led and appropriate for our school.

High quality teaching is supported by ongoing curriculum design, that considers carefully how children will be able to ‘know and do more’ while building opportunities to develop cultural capital and social and spiritual enrichment, to help our pupils become responsible and caring citizens, who understand the local community and wider world.

Implicit in the intended outcomes detailed below is the intention that the gap between non-disadvantaged pupils’ attainment and progress and disadvantaged pupils’ attainment and progress will continue to narrow. Our approach will be responsive to common challenges and individual needs and rooted in assessment.

To ensure they are effective we:

  • ensure disadvantaged pupils are challenged in the work that they’re set
  • act early to intervene at the point any need is identified
  • adopt a whole school approach in which all staff take responsibility for disadvantaged pupils’ outcomes and raise expectations of what they can achieve
  • provide high quality emotional and pastoral support. 


  • Children from low income families who are known to be eligible for free school meals.

  • Children who are, who have been in receipt of free school meals in the last 6 years (ever 6 FSM).

  • Children who have been looked after continuously for more than 6 months.

  • Children whose parents are currently serving in the armed forces.
