I am delighted to introduce myself as a new Governor at Amesbury CE Primary School. I am a serving member of the Royal Military Police Special Investigation Branch and cherish the opportunity to offer my support and professional skills to our wonderful school. I particularly look forward to forming a strong relationship with the school staff, children and the wider community. As a father, I understand the importance of education and hope that my contribution can help deliver meaningful longterm benefits to our children. I was educated at an international school in Madrid and returned to the UK to attend university. After graduating I enlisted into the Army, during which I have enjoyed numerous postings abroad. I have two teenage boys who live with their dog Gerry-Bacon near York; they visit me regularly. My wife Amanda and I live in Bulford with our daughter, and we plan to permanently relocate to Amesbury in the near future. In my spare time, I am an enthusiastic scale modelist, keen powerlifter and enjoy long family walks.

Our four children were educated at different schools locally. I taught in Salisbury for twenty-five years, teaching various age groups from Reception up to Year 11 GCSE classes. Currently I am the Link Governor for Early Years and Special Education Needs ( SEND). I am the Chair of the Teaching and Learning Committee. I enjoy attending school events (when possible), and I am pleased to be able to help the local community as a governor, supporting the school, meeting pupils and staff. My hobbies include gardening, walking our labrador, Scipio, reading and swimming. I have some rescued exbattery hens as well as Light Sussex hens, who enjoy freedom in their part of the garden. I am also sometimes kept busy helping to look after our five grandchildren. I attend church locally and belong to various groups.

I have a currently have a daughter at the school in Y4 and my son finished at Amesbury Primary last year. I joined the Governing Body in 2015 as a Co-opted Governor to try and give something back to the school and community, and I am now serving my second term. I have previously been both Chair and Vice-Chair of Governors and I currently sit on the Resources Committee, and during my time as part of the Full Governing Body (FGB) I have been involved in a wide range of areas. We have been fortunate to recently recruit several new Governors to help strengthen the FGB and continue to take the school forward. Professionally, I am a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. I have an extensive background in product design and development, and I currently work at QinetiQ within Systems Engineering. My interests, when time allows, include cycling, photography, walking and camping, (plus some recent attempts at stand-up paddle boarding with the children).

I have been a Foundation Governor at Amesbury Church of England Primary School since October 2018. I currently have 2 girls at the School, Lucy (Year 4) & Charlotte (Year 2) with my eldest Georgina having spent a wonderful 5 years there & now flourishing at South Wilts. We live in Amesbury almost opposite St Mary & St Melor Church, and for the past 10 years have had a very close connection with both the school & the church. I work as an IT Solution Architect which normally means a fair amount of global travel but that’s been somewhat limited recently to a 20 second walk to my garden office! What little spare time I have is spent running, fly fishing, driving over Salisbury Plain in my trusty Landrover and playing guitar (badly). As a Foundation Governor and as a parent I feel passionate about the school’s future and its place within our community. While each governor has specific roles and duties within the governing body, it’s certainly a case of the sum being greater than the sum of the parts.

Parent Governor 19 November 2020 - 18 November 2024

I currently sit as a Parent Governor on the School Governor Board. Both of my children are pupils at Amesbury Primary, Freya in Y4 and Oscar in YR, and whilst they keep me more than busy I joined the Board in November 2020 as I was keen to really contribute to the school’s development and progression. Therefore the last six months have seen me involved in a range of activities, including assessing how we can better monitor and evaluate the school’s overall performance. So far it has been a really enjoyable and insightful experience and one that I would to recommend to other parents when the next opportunity to be a member of the governing body comes up. Outside of the school, I work for the MoD at Army HQ (Andover) and I am currently focused on logistics programme management and ensuring that the Army has the correct level of stocks for operations. Overall I have spent 17 years in the Civil Service, both in Andover and Whitehall, as well as one year as a secondary school teacher. My aim is to try and bring the skills and experience from this career to good use at the school, ensuring that all of its pupils have a rich and rewarding education.

I have been a School Governor for over 30 years and have served in both Primary and Secondary Schools. My experience has shown me that the role of a Governor is an important one, whilst ensuring that the school delivers on education and care within its means, support to the leadership and staff is equally as important. It is also to look into the future and work towards school improvements to enhance student outcomes. I am retired now, but my career was in aircraft engineering with the Ministry of Defence. I went to school in Bulford and Durrington, completing my education at the Adcroft School of Building at Trowbridge. I was apprenticed at A&AEE Boscombe Down and moved on into various roles in MoD in engineering and project management. My particular responsibility within the Governing Body at the moment is to lead on Resources, which includes finance, site and facilities. I will continue to support the school wherever I can.

Following a degree in Politics from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, I worked at Sotheby’s before having my children, and ran my own catering company alongside family life. I have a passion for primary school education, and a strong commitment to continuous school improvement. I am delighted to have been recently appointed the Chair of Governors at Amesbury CE Primary School - the governors work together as a committed team, supporting our dedicated staff to help all our pupils realise their full potential and have the best possible primary education experience. I think it’s important to continue to learn new skills so I took up golf just after Lockdown 1. I also enjoy walking our 2 dogs, gardening, tennis, skiing, yoga, and bridge. I am currently the LA Governor at The Minster CE Primary School in Warminster, and I have been Chair of Governors at another Wiltshire Primary School. Link Responsibility: Designated Lead for Safeguarding, Looked after Children & Previously Looked After Children and Disadvantaged Children

I was appointed Interim Head teacher of Amesbury CE Primary School in September 2021, and I am delighted to be part of such a supportive and welcoming school community. I started my teaching career in prisons and young offender institutions – a role which I thoroughly enjoyed. I have always been interested in the role between education and later life chances. I am fully committed to ensuring that every child at Amesbury is able to achieve well academically, be challenged in and outside of the classroom and to be taught moral values such as tolerance, respect and honesty, so that they are able to take their place in (and be prepared for) life in a modern, democratic society.

As an ex-officio governor, I attend all governing body meetings and provide detailed and relevant information about pupils' progress, attainment and overall school development on a broad range of curricular activities. A key responsibility is all matters pertaining to safeguarding. I have been married to John for 23 years and we have 4 children ranging in age from 25 to 13. We are a busy and noisy household and you will often find me in the kitchen surrounded by either our 4 dogs – Teddy, Henry, Dave & Chizzy – or our 3 cats – Truffles, Amy and Enid. When I am not at work, I enjoy walking the dogs in the beautiful Somerset countryside where we live, watching The Great British Bake Off, singing (enthusiastically) and the theatre.
